Goals for CSC255:
I felt that my CSC255 (CS0) students would would prepare more intensely, when expecting an audience and full responsibility of conducting a class for very eager ten year-olds. This change would provide a "client-based" approach to projects, where real people with real problems would replace textbook-described, imaginary projects or exercises. Study and preparation would have extra meaning beyond writing in bluebooks, because the children needed the expertise of my students, as their teacher had no computing experience.
Additional Goal and Citation:
In addition, the project would allow an alternative form of evaluation, where my students' lesson plans--both written and oral descriptions--and handouts, along with observations of the teaching sessions would replace traditional testing of the concepts being taught. For full details of the class, see: Turning Liabilities into Assets in a General Education Course, Proceedings of the 1998 ACM SIGCSE Technical Symposium, Atlanta, GA, February, 1998.
