1) Women in Computer Science Program

Having a class with one female student, as I did spring 1998 and spring 2000, makes me extremely unhappy, because I fear that a combination of societal expectations, discipline-specific factors and an unfriendly environment have discouraged women from pursuing this degree. I am just as unhappy for the men in the class who are not learning to work with women. I do not reflect upon this situation every now and then, when I am idle, but every single day, in every single class. I am completely dedicated to this issue and will never cease working to improve the numbers--and more important, the climate.

2) Science Research Fellows (SRF)

I have participated in this program for the past decade, working with the First-year Seminar, the SRF Committee and summer research students.

The picture to the left shows my spring 2000 SRF group, which worked on a project concerning facial symmetry. Scott Ross, Psychology Department, co-sponsored the project.

The picture to the right includes my summer 1998 SRF summer research student, Daniel Mendoza, working with Tiffany Booth. This project was continued by Daniel and Ryan Phillips, during summer 1999. The project, co-sponsored by Wade Hazel, Biological Sciences, involved writing a computer simulation that depicted the evolution of a predator-induced trait in the acorn barnacle (Chthalamus anisopoma).

3) Chair of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, and later the Computer Science Department (July 1993 through December 1995)

4) Member: Association for Computing Machinery's Committee on Women in Computing (ACM-W)
