Functional Multimedia Research Presented at Conferences (Fall, 2007)

During the summer of 2007, DePauw Computer Science faculty member Brian Howard worked with Cory Boatright (Hiram College) and Dan Mateas (Simon's Rock College of Bard) on the SCALES project. The goal of the project is to develop a tool for teaching concepts such as recursion and data abstraction to beginning programmers by enabling them to manipulate graphics and music with the Scala programming language. Scala is a recently-developed mixed-paradigm language, which combines aspects of both functional and object-oriented approaches to programming. A poster describing the work received second place in the student poster competition at the 2007 Midwest Regional Conference of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges, held at Miami University of Hamilton in September. Boatright and Howard collaborated on a paper explaining the details of the project, which was one of nine papers selected for presentation at the 2007 Midstates Conference for Undergraduate Research in Computer Science and Mathematics, held at John Carroll University in November.
