DePauw Visited by Barbara Simons, National Electronic Voting Expert (October, 2006)

An expert on electronic voting, Barbara Simons was a member of the National Workshop on Internet Voting that was convened at the request of President Clinton. Simons was President of ACM from July 1998 until June 2000. ACM is the oldest and largest scientific and educational society of computer professionals, with about 80,000 members. She was selected by C|NET as one of its 26 Internet "Visionaries" and by Open Computing as one of the "Top 100 Women in Computing". Simon's talk, entitled "Computerized Voting Machines: Who is Counting Your Vote?", examines some of the technical issues relating to computerized voting, describes some alternative systems currently available, reviews some horror stories, and considers legislative efforts to repair the damage caused by the purchase of voting machines that have major security, accessibility, and reliability problems.
